In honour of the 25th anniversary of the Outsiders movie release, AOL.com had this up on their site:

http://movies.aol.com/where-are-they-now/the-outsiders

Ignoring the fact they got some details about the film wrong (fail! as Remy would say lol), kudos to AOL for including updates on the actors who played the smaller roles - and some info on the TV show actors (although only the big names).

The other women have children that are older, and they're all sharing their advice and stories. Meanwhile, their husbands are out at a local bar hanging out.

As the party continues on, two armed thugs, a man named Cal (Graham) and a woman named Rose (Taggart), break into the house and demand the jewelry and money from the women. The daughter of one of the characters escapes and goes to the police. Soon the police are on the way, and the baddie's lookout (Withrow), rushes into the house to tell his fellow henchmen the cops are surrounding the house. With the husbands now informed of the danger and getting on the nerves of the local police, the women are trapped with a stressed Ginger, who begins (of course) having trouble with her pregnancy. Rose refuses to let any of them go - she uses Ginger as a bargaining chip. If they get a car to escape in, Ginger can see a doctor.

Meanwhile, Abby (Mills) starts to seduce Cal, who is hopped up on drugs. Rose is his ex, so you can imagine how well it's all going over lol. Glenn plays Danny (according to IMDB, but I honestly thought he was called Mikey at one point and Donny at another... ), the youngest member of their little robbery crew, who is anxious to let Ginger go.

Abby gets chewed out for her behaviour from one of the other women, and when Cal hits Karen (Lee), Rose stops him. Karen uses the opportunity to try and reason with Rose, but soon realizes that won't work - Rose resents their money, their families and everything they have in their lives. Karen starts to believe that if they don't do something, they won't get out alive.

As the police surround the house, Abby tries to seduce Cal once again and manages to get his gun, while the women take out Rose. Honest to God, I don't know where the hell they sent Danny/Donny, who finally crawls out of the plot hole he fell into when the cops start pouring into the house. The whole time the women were tackling Rose and Abby was fighting off Cal and the police were rushing into the house, I was all "Where the %*@# did Danny/Donny go?!" lol.

The women are safe and reunited with their husbands, while the police bring out all of the bad guys (yes, Glenn's character is STILL ALIVE at the end of it. I know! Bad guy/guns/cops - I so figured he'd be dead on the carpet by the end of the episode). Apparently the Knots Landing police have only one cruiser, since they put all three bad guys the backseat together. I figure maybe the Ewing's can donate for a second cruiser since they got their butts saved and all.

The quality of the episode wasn't the greatest, but I got a few screencaps anyway.

Pictures

Danny/Donny being a good lookout.

The hostages huddle together while Danny/Donny looks on.

Danny/Donny tries to convince Rose to let Ginger go.

And again, because I like the jacket =)

Danny/Donny and Rose area little jumpy, holding their guns on the women when they accidentally knock over something.

Danny/Donny, his big gun, Cal and Rose listlessly wait for the cops to respond.

Rose and Danny/Donny keep an eye on the women.

While Rose holds a gun on Karen, Abby shows up with a shot gun to save the day.

Danny/Donny tries to convince Rose to put the gun down.
I have TWO new stories up:

1) Missed Opportunities - It relates to Middle Ground, Triangle and Holding Back The Years, and focuses on Curly Shepard's relationship (or lack thereof) with Tricia Baxter (who appeared in Triangle and Holding briefly).

2) A Dark and Stormy Night - A Halloween party at Buck's is the scene of a tragedy. Relates to Triangle. A Buck and OFC POV story, it's a mystery/suspense story.

I also have an update to Holding Back The Years - all of this in honour of "Good Fic Day" - a day where we aim to raise the level of writing in the Outsiders section - good spelling, grammar, punctuation, characterization and general writing are a great thing to read - hopefully seeing all the good fic on the main page will help inspire people to work really hard at their fan fiction.

So far we've had good fic posted from - Fosterchild, Hahukum Konn, Maxiekat, byebyebirdie58, Ski-Ming, Another Illusion, Big Town Avenue, Chronic Sarcasm, Nittany Lizard, xXFlowerxChildXx, Heart's Eclipse, So Confusingly Amusing and myself.

We are trying to honour the wonderful book Susie wrote by doing justice to her characters by keeping them in character and working as hard as we can on our writing. She gave us something great to read - let's return the favour.

I think One Shot. I really like it, but it's an OMC POV, so I can see where some people might not be into it.

Most fun story:
It was written in 2006, but Middle Ground. It's got a lot of nice moments. If we have to stick with 2007 stories, then Initiation.

Sexiest story:
Hmmm. I think Holding wins the Sexxors Award.

Story with the single sexiest moment:
Holding's sexiest moment never made it to the final fanfiction.net cut lol.

Hardest story to write:
I had a hard time with parts of Triangle because it brought up a lot of feelings towards someone no longer in my life. Luckily the story really wiped a lot of them away. I associate a lot of the stuff in Triangle with the story and Tim Shepard now, so yay!

Most unintentionally telling story:
I'm not sure. Triangle maybe if you know where to look.

Year-End Fanfic Wrap-Up

Name the fics you've written this year, a little bit about them, and what inspired you to write them. Provide a link if you wish.

Triangle - I was inspired by a name that popped into my head - Ruby Merril. I thought she sounded like a great character. I also wanted to write something about Tim. The rest of the inspiration came from things I've done in my life or been around, lots of it came from research I had done and not used and wanted to use lol.

The Return of the King - I was inspired by a chapter in Triangle and I wondered how Tim was in front of his gang.

One Shot - I had a canon character hurt an OMC and I wanted to know how that OMC saw the canon character. I had never written his POV before.

A Day In The Life - I really, really wanted to do a fic about Ruby and Tim finding out Dallas had died. I knew it wouldn't fit in Triangle at all. I just wanted to deal with it - it's almost like an Epilogue to Triangle.

Initiation - This was inspired by a line in Triangle from Two-Bit, promising Ruby a good time if she came back to high school. I wondered what his idea of a good time actually was lol.

Holding Back The Years - This story came from the second chapter - the hotel encounter. That all came from a dream I had, set to the tune of "Whipping Post" by the Allman Brothers. I thought it might just be a one-shot for myself and a few friends, but Artemis inspired me with plot ideas and it grew into a huge story.

Out of Character vs Exploring What We Didn't See

Since I'm without my laptop (cry ... she's having an LCD and DVD burner replaced. SURGERY!) and therefore graphics I can use to make a new Glenn post (I've got Dudes screencaps but no access to them at the moment), I've been writing a few little essays on different aspects of fan fiction writing, like my little Mary Sue rant below. I'll be posting up some of these over the next few days.

Today I decided to tackle the issue of

Making the Canon Characters Out of Character

A lot of writers at ff.net write the canon characters as so completely different from the book that they are barely identifiable as the characters we know and love. A lot of them maintain that they are "a little out of character" (OOC) because they like to explore different sides of the character that we don't see in the book, and that's what fan fiction is for.

On the surface, that's very right. Fan fiction is for exploring things beyond (or before) the book. But changing the character's basic nature only works if it's done in a way that is believable to the reader. There's a difference between being OOC and exploring sides of the characters we didn't get to see.

We never saw what Two-Bit is like around girlfriends; we have to make it up. But, we do know he's funny, he jokes when he's upset, he goes along with the crowd, he seems to date around, he doesn't mind hanging out with Pony and Johnny who are younger, he seems to drink a lot, the Soc girl Marcia seemed to really like him, and in the movie he gives her his jacket to wear because it's cold.

So using that, we can make Two-Bit any number of things - maybe around girls he's even sillier because they make him nervous. Maybe he jokes to hide that nervousness and makes inappropriate or rude jokes which turn girls off. Maybe he drinks a lot on a date which turns girls off. Maybe he dates younger girls for some reason. Maybe he only dates girls his friends approve of because he doesn't want to stray from the crowd. Or maybe it's the opposite - maybe he lets his guard down for girls and is a really amazing guy to date. Marcia sure seemed to like him. Maybe he's a total ladies man and he hides it from his friends for some reason.

You could turn him into a bumbling fool or a suave ladies man - that's not OOC if it's done in a way that shows where it comes from. That's exploring other sides of Two-Bit

But making Two-Bit a violent drunk who attacks women - that's OOC unless you show the escalation. Maybe he drinks a lot more after Johnny and Dally's deaths. Maybe he takes it out on other people, and maybe, one night he loses control and hurts Kathy or his sister. That's not out of character - that starts off with him very much in character and we see how he changes.

Conversely, you could set a story way before the book - maybe Two-Bit was a really mean, nasty person with no sense of humour. That's totally OOC. But maybe your story will show how he changed and grew to become the guy we meet in the book. That's not OOC, that's showing sides of him we didn't know about.

I think just about anything that is OOC can be believable if it's written right. But the key is putting in the effort to show where the change happens and why.

Dally bringing flowers to a girl he dates? That's really OOC. But maybe this is after Johnny has died and Dally got to read his letter. Maybe it changed him a little, but he's struggling with that. Maybe he brings the girl a bunch of weeds he picked at the railway tracks and she's offended, and it pisses him off that his effort was ignored. That's much more in character and it shows a difference in him as well as familiarity with his anger. Maybe the girl reminds him of Johnny so much he's almost using her to get a piece of him back.

Being OOC isn't bad - but not explaining where it comes from or why these new personality traits are there make your readers groan. We like to read about Susie's characters, and the more in character they are, the better the story is. Look at some of the most popular stories at ff.net - the guys are in character. It doesn't mean you can't show other sides of them - it just means that we need to see how it happened, why it happened and maybe see a glimmer of who we know shining through.

For all the writers out there that aren't quite sure what a Mary Sue is or why she's annoying, I have a nice example for you.

Horatio Caine of CSI: Miami is a Mary Sue.

The man does no work, aside from saving the day at the end (Heroic!Sue). Tonight he was in his truck as it exploded, got out with nary a scratch on him, then confronted the bad guy alone, shot all three baddies and saved the day (BadAss!Sue). From episode to episode, he stands around watching everyone else work, but is always first in the building with a gun drawn, always gets the drop on the bad guys, always saves the day, never gets hurt. He dated and married a model (Everyone Loves! Sue) who died of cancer (Angsty!Sue), his brother's wife fell for him (and vice versa, of course ... there's no such thing as non-recipricol love in Mary Sue land), his nephew idolizes him, his brother was tragic and Horatio was always the hero compared to him, he had a son with another woman while undercover saving the day of course. If it's Homeland Security's jurisdiction, Horatio will save the day! The FBI is involved? Horatio catches the bad guy! CIA? Why, Horatio makes them look stupid too!

Let's not forget his team idolizes him, his enemies always end up in jail or dead and kids worship the ground he walks on.

He is the biggest Mary Sue on television.

I don't care about his character. I don't care if his gorgeous wife dies, or his co-workers get killed, or his son is in jail or his car blows up with him in it. He's a cartoon character.

Some people like that - hell, a lot of people do when you look at the ratings for the show. But the character isn't complicated or interesting - he's laughable, which in turn makes the stories they tell laughable. It's impossible to suspend your disbelief to enjoy the show, and the more you watch, the more ridiculous the character gets.

The other characters on CSI Miami come off a lot more realistic and interesting - I care more about what happens to them because there is that realism.

The same goes for fan fiction - while a Mary Sue may give you a lot of (unintended) laughs and sporking material, in the end, you don't really care about the story or the character. It was just something that distracted you for a little while. But when you find a fully realized character (or even one that's on its way to being a fully developed character), you start to care about the story, about the plot and the characters. It's something you begin to invest in.

We all feel that way about Susie's characters because she took the time to develop even the minor characters into people we believe really could have existed. They are characters that we care about, and we care about what happens to them - all you have to do is check out fanfiction.net's Outsiders fic section for the proof. We care so much we want the characters to live on somehow.

So when you create an original character, whether it's to add it to a fan fiction story or for your original writing, go beyond the silly cartoon stereotypes - create a character that people care about. It's hard work, and sometimes it's hard to look at objectively because you care about the character so much yourself that you can't tell how others see him/her - that's when outside opinion is so helpful. Listen to people who tell you to watch out for Mary Sue tendencies, listen to reviewers who give you reasons why they think your character is heading down the Mary Sue trail of tears.

Because God forbid someone create the Horatio Caine of the Outsiders fandom. We don't need anymore Sue's here, we're full up.

Mary Sue Litmus Test
Universal Mary Sue Litmus Test

For all of you that enjoy the content here and are fans of Glenn's, I've created a website for him =)

http://www3.telus.net/tyee/glennwithrow

It contains all of the reviews, screencaps and video clips that appear here (the website links to them here) as well as a brief bio, links and a guestbook. All of the content for the site will still appear here, and I'll be adding more as I find/get more and bumping each entry up here.

If you run an Outsiders related website, feel free to link to the site from your own site. Let me know and I'll do the same and link back to you.

Information & Review

Sweet Sixteen (1983)
Directed by: Dimitri Sotirakis (as Jim Sotos)
Screenplay by: Erwin Goldman
Starring: Aleisa Shirley, Dana Kimmell, Steve Antin, Don Stroud, Glenn Withrow, Bo Hopkins, Don Shanks
Rated: R (violence, coarse language, nudity)

Sweet 16 is a horror movie (more suspense/murder mystery, I'd say), that came out in the early '80s.

I'm not going to review the movie quite yet - seeing as I turned it off after Glenn's character was killed lol. Once I watch the whole thing you'll get a review lol. But I do have to say that from the first half hour, and despite the gratuitous nudity, I think this is quite a different kind of "horror" movie.

This movie was filmed around 1981 I think. Rated R for "gratuitous shower scene of a supposedly 15-year-old character that will make you feel like a pedophile even if you tell yourself she was over 18 in real life, and you're a woman". [Just found something on the web that indicates Aleisa Shirley was 16 when this was filmed. Please, someone tell me otherwise! Quick!] Also for violence, which I didn't actually think was that bad - maybe I've been watching too much CSI? I am so not a horror movie person, but this one didn't bother me.

I'm borrowing these screencaps from sassygirl who actually took 145 screencaps of this movie. I bow down to her awesomeness.

I've only got a couple here to whet your appetite ...

Pictures

Glenn's character Johnny (right) and the sheriff's son Hank (Steve Antin) hang out playing pinball.

Hank and Johnny harrass a local Native Indian who passes on 15-year-old Melissa's advances.

And quickly set a landspeed record for backpedalling when he makes a move towards them lol. (This whole scene was funny as hell)

Melissa works on Johnny. I am embarrassed to admit to owning a shirt almost identical to this, but in white. And there were beads hanging off each strip.

Melissa succeeds in getting some action.

After dropping Melissa at home, Johnny runs out of gas. This is a horror movie, and thus, never a good sign.

Drunken Johnny stumbles around sans leather jacket, muttering to himself and almost pitching headfirst into the ground numerous times before hearing something suspicious.

Yep, it was suspicious alright.
I began writing Holding Back The Years in July when I wrote a quick prologue, which I thought would be a one shot. When I realized I had an idea for a story in there, I started writing it "for real" in August. This is a timeline of how my progress writing went as I wrote:

Jul 11 - Prologue done
Aug 2 - Ch 1 done
Aug 9 - Ch 2 and Ch 3 done
Aug 10 - Ch 4 done
Aug 13 - Ch 5 and Ch 6 done
Aug 14 - Ch 7 done
Aug 18 - Ch 8 done
Aug 21 - Ch 9 done
Aug 22 - Ch 10 done
Aug 23 - Ch 11 done
Aug 24 - Ch 12 and Ch 13 done
Aug 26 - Ch 14 done
Aug 27 - Ch 15 and Ch 16 done
Aug 28 - Ch 17 done
Aug 29 - Ch 18 and Ch 19 done
Aug 30 - Ch 20 done
Aug 31 - Ch 21 done
Sep 1 - Ch 22 done
Sep 3 - Ch 23 and Ch 24 done
Sep 4 - Ch 25 done
Sep 5 - Ch 26 done
Sep 7 - Ch 27 done
Sep 9 - Ch 28 done
Sep 10 - Ch 29 done
Sep 12 - Ch 30 done
Sep 13 - Ch 31 done
Sep 14 - Ch 32 done
Sep 15 - Ch 33 done
Sep 17 - Ch 34 done
Sep 18 - Ch 35 done
Sep 19 - Ch 36 done
Sep 20 - Ch 37 done
Sep 21 - Ch 38 and Ch 39 done
Sep 23 - Ch 40 done
Sep 24 - Epilogue done
Sep 30 - My edit done
Sep 30 - 2nd beta edit done

It's currently 131,441 words after three edits [Note: As of March 2008 it is currently 145,265 words]. It was so fun to watch with artemis_rex, big_town_avenue and kupp13. I still laugh my butt off every time I see the scene Arnold and Stonewall (Glenn and Tony "Luke Spencer" Geary) have about reincarnation lol. You guys, we need to watch Naked Lie next, his character is ten kinds of cute.

We do these movie nights quite often, and we're planning an Outsiders movie night for all who are interested. Details are at the Outsiders Fan Fic board - http://z3.invisionfree.com/outsidersfic/ (sign up and register to get access to all the forums).

I got and watched Glenn in Sweet Sixteen the other day. Everyone should see this.

sassygirl is screencapping because she's awesome and can. Stay tuned for that.

In other news, my new fic will be ready to post on October 3rd!

NOADS is one of my favourite reviewers of Outsiders bad fic. Made of harsh criticism and wielding an attitude as sharp as a sword's edge, NOADS aims to inform Outsiders fan fiction authors when they are writing bad fic. What is bad fic, you ask? Well, take a look at most of ff.net. Bad fic bastardizes the canon characters, is rampant with Mary Sue's and makes serious writers and readers pull their hair out - as well as doing a disservice to the lovely S.E. Hinton, who I'm sure reads fanfiction.net with a bottle of Maalox in one hand and Gravol in the other.

NOADS is no holds barred. S/he/it leaves harsh reviews - but with real tips for improving - that usually cause the authors to take their fic down. Which, hey, if it's a bad fic, I'm not complaining. If it returns as a decent fic? Even better.

We here at my journal (and by we, I mean me) have received word that NOADS has accepted the invitation to become Fic Sporker In Residence at the new fan fic writing board (http://z3.invisionfree.com/outsidersfic/index.php?) which you get access to when you post a lot there. What's a spork you ask? A spork is a spoon/fork. But it's also what you do to a bad fic (stab it with a spork until it dies). Check out the marysues community here at LJ where people spork Mary Sue fics from all fandoms.
